Carlos Alcaraz began his clay court season with a dominant win over Sebastian Baez. The Spaniard made a blistering start, winning nine of the first 10 games as he won the first set with ease and opened up a 3-0 lead in the second. The only blemish came when he was broken in the seventh game, but he quickly broke back and held to love in the final service game to win 6-1 6-3.
He faces Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the next round of the tournament. The Argentine came from a set down to beat Terence Atmane. Etcheverry, who won a title earlier this year in Rio, won 3-6 6-3 6-2 and will now face the seven-time Grand Slam champion for the first time.
Etcheverry can be an effective player on clay, and this is a good test for Alcaraz as he continues the defence of his title. If he makes another fast start, he should have no trouble in making it through to the quarter-finals.
