He suffered his first defeat since the Wimbledon final against Taylor Fritz, losing 6-2 6-3 against the American. Nevertheless, the Spaniard will be desperate to put things right and play an integral role in Europe’s comeback as they start the day 9-3 down.
Francisco Cerundolo remained unbeaten at the Laver Cup as he defeated Holger Rune in a high-quality encounter on day two. The Argentinian produced a brilliant display against Rune, generating power on his forehand side and dictating much of the rallies against the Norwegian, who improved markedly in the second set. Cerundolo won 6-3 7-6.
Alcaraz leads the head-to-head 3-1 and 1-0 on hard court. He has already defeated Cerundolo on two occasions this year at Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo. Cerundolo is a tough opponent at this event, but the six-time Grand Slam champion is likely to put in an improved performance.
