Carlos Alcaraz continued the defence of his Monte-Carlo Masters title with a three set win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The Spaniard made a fast start, but his level dropped in the second as he made a number of unforced errors and went a double break down. He retrieved one of the breaks, but Etcheverry still went on to level the match. Despite continuing to struggle at times, Alcaraz broke at the start of the third and went on to win 6-1 4-6 6-3.
He now takes on Alexander Bublik for the first time. The Kazakhstani defeated Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. Bublik did not even concede a break point as he won 89% of his first serve points on his way to winning 6-2 7-5.
This is an intriguing battle between two of the most entertaining players on tour. Alcaraz will need to lower his error count, and he could encounter some problems if Bublik is able to hold serve easily and apply pressure in the return games. Alcaraz seems to find a way to win on clay and he is still the firm favourite, but Bublik should be yet another test.
