Camila Osorio got off to a good start in Madrid as she easily defeated Anastasia Zakharova in the first-round. Osorio won the first set without dropping a game and she maintained her level to win 6-0 6-3. She already has a title this season, after winning the Philippines Open earlier this year.
Her next match is against four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. This will be the Japanese’s first match since her surprise early defeat to Talia Gibson in Miami over a month ago. Aside from the United Cup, Osaka has competed in just three tournaments so far in 2026.
This is the first match between the pair on clay, with Osaka leading the head-to-head 2-1. Their most recent match at Indian Wells was competitive earlier this year, with Osaka coming through in three sets.
Osaka is not as strong a player on clay, and that is likely to provide Osorio with encouragement, as she knows her game has challenged the former world number one in the past.
