Brighton Preview: Streaky Seagulls

Fabian Hurzeler’s first season in charge of Brighton and Hove Albion has been a topsy turvy one as the Seagulls sit firmly in the middle-of-the-table but the hosts will be confident of achieving a top eight or nine finish and potential European qualification in these final few weeks.

Brighton come into this one on the back of ending one of their poorer streaks this season as they defeated West Ham United by three goals to two last weekend thanks to an 89th minute equaliser via Kaoru Mitoma before Carlos Baleba pinched the win in the 92nd minute.

Newcastle Preview: Clipped Magpies

Newcastle United have been in excellent form with and without Eddie Howe on the touchline but the former AFC Bournemouth boss has returned to the dugout after suffering pneumonia and the Magpies recovered from a 4-1 defeat to Aston Villa with a victory last week.

They mathematically relegated Ipswich Town at St James’ Park with a comfortable 3-0 victory over the Tractor Boys on Tyneside thanks to an Alexander Isak penalty in first-half stoppage-time before second-half goals from Dan Burn and Will Osula.

Brighton Team News: Van Hecke to return

In his pre-match press conference, Fabian Hurzeler has confirmed that Netherlands international centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke has returned from concussion protocols and is available. Adam Webster is also back in training and could feature but key attacker Joao Pedro is missing through suspension for the Seagulls.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Verbruggen; Wieffer, Dunk, Van Hecke, Estupinan; Ayari, Hinshelwood; March, O’Riley, Adingra; Welbeck

Unavailable: Kadioglu (Injured), Milner (Injured), Rutter (Injured), Pedro (Suspended)

Questionable: Webster (Injured)

Newcastle Team News: Nothing fresh

Having been missing through injury last weekend, it is now expected to that Brazil international midfielder Joelinton will be missing for the rest of the season for Newcastle United. Sven Botman returned to action with a substitue appearance against Ipswich and he came through that unscathed.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Barnes

Unavailable: Lascelles (Injured), Targett (Injured), Hall (Injured), Joelinton (Injured)

Questionable:

Brighton vs Newcastle Prediction

Brighton and Hove Albion have got themselves on good runs immediately after a poor run of form quite often this season and vice versa but if the pattern is to continue then they will be buoyed by last weekend’s late turnaround. Newcastle are a side ideally set up to counteract the possession-dominant style of the Seagulls with their pace and clarity in transition so they will fancy themselves going on the counter-attack and both teams scoring would appear a good bet for this one down on the south coast.

Brighton vs Newcastle Tip: Both teams to score
