Brazil suffered penalty heartbreak at the hands of Portugal, dropping them into this third-place play-off as opposed to the final, a huge disappointment for the four-time champions. Italy meanwhile, were beaten by a formidable Austria who proved too strong for the Azzurri in the second-half, taking the lead before sealing the win late on as Italy piled bodied forward in a desperate attempt to equalise.
Motivation will be understandably hard to come by for the two sets of players having each failed to reach the final. But that could in turn lead to a more entertaining encounter with both teams likely to play with more freedom and an emphasis on an attacking mentality rather than airing on the side of caution and prioritising defensive stability.
