  • Braga have lost only two of their eight UEFA home games against German opposition (W3 D3) and are unbeaten in their last four such matches (W3 D1).
  • Braga have lost both of their previous UEFA two‑legged ties against German opposition: a 2-0 aggregate defeat to Schalke in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup third round, followed by a 4-0 aggregate loss to Werder Bremen in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 32.
  • Braga have reached only their second major UEFA semi‑final, the first coming in the 2010/11 Europa League, when they advanced to the final on away goals against Benfica after a 2–2 aggregate draw.
  • Braga are the first Portuguese club to reach a UEFA semi‑final since the 2013/14 Europa League, when Benfica beat Juventus 2-1 on aggregate.
  • Braga have won their last eight UEFA two-legged ties.
  • Braga have lost only two of their last 19 UEFA matches (W13 D4).
  • Braga have lost only two of their last 16 UEFA home matches (W12 D2).
  • Braga have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League era (from the group stage/league phase to the final) than any other club, with this fixture marking their 100th appearance in the competition proper.
  • Freiburg’s only previous UEFA meetings with Portuguese opposition came against Estoril Praia in the 2013/14 Europa League group stage, where they recorded two draws (1-1 at home, 0-0 away).
  • This is Freiburg’s first UEFA competition semi‑final appearance. They are the 18th different German club to reach the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League semi‑finals, four more than any other nation — with England next on 14.
  • Freiburg have lost only two of their last 12 UEFA matches (W8 D2) and come into this tie on a three‑match winning streak in the Europa League.
  • Only two of Freiburg’s last 34 UEFA matches have finished without a goal being scored.

Braga vs Freiburg prediction

2011 UEFA Europa League runners’ up Braga produced a remarkable comeback against Real Betis in the quarter-finals a couple of weeks ago, fighting back from 3-1 down on aggregate to win 5-3, 4-2 on the night, at La Cartuja. They had a six-match unbeaten run of form ended by a 2-1 defeat in the Azores against Santa Clara at the weekend.

They now face a Freiburg side that were extremely impressive in the quarter-finals as they annihilated Celta Vigo by six goals to one on aggregate. Julian Schuster’s Germans have been fully focused on cup competitions this month with a recent DFB-Pokal semi-final loss to Stuttgart after extra-time last week.

Freiburg are a different animal in Europe but, like the first-leg in Braga in the quarter-final against Betis, a close contest is to be expected and backing a draw would appear a decent bet for this one in northern Portugal.

Braga vs Freiburg tip: Draw
