Bianca Andreescu has won just one of her four matches since returning to the tour following a long-term injury. She lost in the first-round in Rouen on her full return and made the second-round of Madrid before losing to Elena Rybakina in straight sets. She decided to drop down and compete at a Challenger event in Lleida last week but fell at the first hurdle to Kim Birrell. However, she did go on to win the doubles title with Aldila Sutjiadi.
It is understandable that the former US Open champion is considerably rusty after so much time off, but she’ll hope for an improvement in her fortunes this week, which starts with a match against Federica Urgesi.
Urgesi, the home favourite, is ranked outside the top 400 and is making her debut at WTA level. Despite Andreescu only just beginning her comeback, she should have more than enough to defeat the 20-year-old with considerable ease.
