The eighth seed recovered from a set down to beat his compatriot 6-7 7-6 6-3.
The 23-year-old will now meet another American in the shape of Learner Tien, who was also involved in a couple of tie-breaks as he edged Adam Walton 7-6 7-6.
The 25th seed Tien actually won their only previous meeting in Mallorca last year by a 6-4 7-6 scoreline and this match should be just as competitive.
Shelton’s big serve and forehand are not quite as devastating in these conditions and that should help Learner make a big impression.
Tien has a bit more variety and that could be important in a match that may well involve another breaker or a third set.
