Belinda Bencic vs Katie Volynets prediction
Belinda Bencic will be competing in her first tournament since the US Open. She suffered a disappointing defeat to Ann Li in the second-round at Flushing Meadows, losing 6-3 6-3. Bencic has failed to make much of an impact on the tour since getting through to the Wimbledon semi-finals in July, as she has lost three of her last five matches. Nevertheless, there have been some very strong tournaments on hard court for the Swiss, as she won the Abu Dhabi Open in February and made the quarter-finals at Indian Wells a month later.
She is set to face Katie Volynets after the American defeated compatriot Peyton Stearns in three sets. Volynets won five games in a row from 4-1 down to take the first set and despite her level dropping in the second, she came through to win 6-4 2-6 6-3. It was a strong serving performance from the world number 107, who produced a first serve percentage of 80%.
Bencic will start as the heavy favourite, but Volynets will take some confidence from her wins in qualifying and over Stearns. The Swiss should have enough quality in her armoury to advance in Beijing.
