Belinda Bencic began her campaign in Madrid with a straight sets win over Petra Marcinko. The pair exchanged four successive breaks of serve at the start of the match, but Bencic wasn’t broken on serve after that as she won 6-4 6-2 after an hour and 24 minutes. Bencic reached the round-of-16 stage at this event last year.
She now faces Diana Shnaider. The Russian fought back as she came from a set and a break down to beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the previous round. Shnaider looked to be heading out as she dropped the first set and went 3-1 down in the second. However, she won six of the next eight games to draw level. Shnaider dominated the decider to win 3-6 7-5 6-1.
These two have played twice before, both times at Indian Wells in the third-round, with Bencic winning in straight sets. The Swiss will be the favourite for this one.
