Beatriz Haddad Maia’s bid to return to the US Open quarter-finals will face a big test against improving Maria Sakkari.
The Brazilian surged to the last eight at Flushing Meadows last year and appears to be finding her best form back at this tournament after a tough 2025 so far.
Former world number three, Sakkari seems to have turned a corner having almost dropped out of the top 100 earlier this year.
The Greek is eyeing a place back in the top 50 and has breezed through her first two matches here.
This will be their fourth meeting with the South American winning all of their previous encounters across three different surfaces.
The power match-up clearly doesn’t suit the Greek, but if Haddad Maia’s forehand falters, as it has done a lot in the past eight months, she may have some joy.
This could well be a scrap, however, with it being a good shout to suggest a winner will emerge in a decider.
