Beatriz Haddad Maia delighted the home support as she produced a ruthless display in her opening outing in São Paulo. 

The top seed romped to a 6-1 6-1 victory over Miriana Tona to lay down a statement of title intent. 

The Brazilian now meets her compatriot Laura Pigossi for a place in the quarter-finals after the world number 105 came from behind to sink Elizabeth Mandlik 2-6 6-3 6-4.

This will be their third meeting and Haddad Maia has won the previous two. 

It’s unlikely we’ll see a big shock and the betting may hinge on whether Pigossi can bag a set, although the top seed’s form in the opening match may suggest otherwise.
