Beatriz Haddad Maia began the defence of her title with a relatively straight-forward victory over Dayeon Beck. The Brazilian did encounter some difficulty in the second set, as she was broken twice when serving for the match after racing to a 5-0 lead, but hit back to win 6-4 6-3. Haddad Maia now has five straight wins at the tournament stretching back to last year.
She will face Ella Seidel for a place in the quarter-finals. Seidel recovered from going a set behind to defeat Jessika Ponchet in round one. She was broken at the end of set one but did not lose her serve thereafter, winning 5-7 6-4 6-2. The German crucially saved two break points on her serve after breaking Ponchet at the start of the third set.
Haddad Maia’s aggressive baseline game and greater pedigree make her the favourite for this one, but Seidel is a player with promise and is likely to push the Brazilian.
