Bayer Leverkusen look to build on their much-needed win over in-form Eintracht Frankfurt under new boss Kasper Hjulmand with Borussia Monchengladbach next up in the Bundesliga.

Bayer Leverkusen preview: Hjulmand bounce

The new manager bounce has worked well for Bayer Leverkusen following a desperately needed victory in Kasper Hjulmand’s first match in charge since taking over after the firing of Erik ten Hag. High-flying Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 3-1 in Leverkusen with Alejandro Grimaldo playing a starring role with that notorious free-kick prowess.

Once again, it was Grimaldo who starred in midweek, helping to rescue a point in Copenhagen as Leverkusen begun their Champions League campaign with hard-fought 2-2 draw which saw them come from behind twice late on.

Borussia Monchengladbach preview: No wins and no goals

Borussia Monchengladbach are already in a spot of bother despite the season being still so early. They are yet to score in the 2025-26 Bundesliga and were most recently thrashed on their own turf by four goals to nil at the hands of Werder Bremen, triggering understandable anger from the Gladbach fans.

The fixture list doesn’t look any easier for Borussia Monchengladbach moving forward with consecutive away fixtures on the menu. First here against Leverkusen before they travel to Eintracht Frankfurt next weekend. It could get worse before it gets better for Gladbach at this rate.

Bayer Leverkusen team news: Tillman to drop back

Bayer Leverkusen are short in central midfield due to Andrich’s suspension and Palacios’ injury, so expect Malik Tillman to play in that position alongside Garcia, rather than further forward. As always, the wing-backs will be crucial at both ends of the pitch.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Flekken; Quansah, Bade, Tapsoba; Vazquez, Tillman, Garcia, Grimaldo; Maza, Schick, Ben Seghir

Unavailable: Andrich (Suspended), Fernandez (Suspended), Palacios (Injured), Terrier (Injured)

Questionable:

Borussia Monchengladbach team news: Kleindienst still missing

Striker Tim Kleindienst remains out with a knee injury, so Machino is likely to continue up for the visitors. Both Mohya and Swider are doubtful through injury and illness respectively, whilst Ngoumou definitely won’t feature.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Nicolas; Scally, Elvedi, Diks, Ullrich; Reitz, Sander; Honorat, Reyna, Hack; Machino

Unavailable: Kleindienst (Injured), Ngoumou (Injured)

Questionable: Mohya (Injured), Swider (Illness)

Bayer Leverkusen vs Borussia Monchengladbach prediction

Bayer Leverkusen are still far from the perfect outfit on the pitch and if not for Grimaldo’s free-kicks, would likely still be without a win despite the appointment of Hjulmand. But they look better from an attacking perspective and look to be slowly starting to find their feet. The Eintracht Frankfurt win and comeback against Copenhagen shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Borussia Monchengladbach on the other hand, have lacked any sort of offensive potency and now appear to have fallen apart defensively if last weekend was to go by. Confidence within the dressing room is low and when considering how poor they’ve been so far this season, the smart move here would be to back a home win.
