Augsburg preview: All momentum gone
Augsburg will be so disappointed at not being able to back up that brilliant 1-3 win away at Freiburg to begin the season. Since then, they’ve been beaten by both Bayern Munich and St. Pauli, the latter a particularly disappointing result after taking the lead early on at the Millerntor-Stadion.
Fabian Rieder gave Augsburg the lead after 16 minutes, but St. Pauli staged a comeback, underlining the poor nature of the Augsburg backline, who caved in under pressure from the hosts, conceding in the 45th and 77th minute.
Mainz preview: Still yet to get started
Three games played in the Bundesliga and just a single point on the board. That underlines how poor it’s been from a Mainz point of view so far in 2025-26. Both losses were by a single goal and when taking into account their offensive struggles, expect an ultra-attacking style of play here from the home side.
One can only wonder if their European exploits are having an adverse effect on Mainz’s domestic form. It would make sense when taking into account their relatively small squad, who will struggle with the volume of matches played.
Augsburg team news: Left-back missing
Augsburg are without Greek left-back Dimitris Giannoulis, who is currently nursing a thigh injury. Also missing is winger Anton Cade as he recovers from an ankle problem.
Predicted XI (3-4-3): Matsima, Gouweleeuw, Schlotterbeck; Wolf, Jakic, Massengo, Fellhauer; Rieder, Komur, Claude-Maurice
Unavailable: Giannoulis (Injured), Kade (Injured)
Questionable:
Mainz team news: Up to four absentees
Mainz boss Bo Henriksen won’t be able to call upon four players for his side’s trip to Augsburg with Dal, Hollerbach, Gleiber and Lee all out injured. Full-back Silvan Widmer could join the quartet on the sidelines as he battles an ankle injury.
Predicted XI (3-4-3): Zentner; Da Costa, Hanche-Olsen, Kohr; Caci, Maloney, Amiri, Mwene; Nordin, Weiper, Nebel
Unavailable: Dal (Injured), Hollerbach (Injured), Gleiber (Injured), Lee (Injured)
Questionable: Widmer (Injured)
Augsburg vs Mainz prediction
This is an important encounter for both teams, each of whom are desperate for three points. Augsburg to arrest their recent slide in results, which has seen them gain nothing from their last two Bundesliga fixtures, whilst Mainz are aiming to finally get their campaign up and running after a desperately slow start.
Neither are the strongest from a defensive perspective and plenty of chances at both ends are expected over the course of 90 minutes. Whilst the result itself is hard to call, backing both teams to score is a play well worth making when considering the fragilities of the two backlines on show.
