A dramatic drop off late in the regular season saw Auckland FC miss out on a top two spot but now that’s irrelevant in the heat of this post-season. They haven’t won in their last seven games across 90 minutes but defeated Melbourne City and ending their campaign via a penalty shootout to set up this semi-final.
The momentum you can gather from winning on penalties cannot be underestimated and with Adelaide United at risk of being undercooked following a long break between games, this is a big opportunity for Auckland. Although unbeaten in their last ten, you need to go all the way back to April 26 for Adelaide’s last match.
Auckland got the better of Adelaide 2-1 at home in the regular season and could easily catch the visitors cold. The onus is on them to take an aggregate lead with them to Adelaide and whilst the safety of the draw no bet market should be utilised, backing the home side may well prove to be an inspired play.
