Athletic Bilbao vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Athletic Bilbao became the latest victims of a Kylian Mbappe masterclass in their midweek defeat to Real Madrid, with Xavi Alonso's side winning 0-3 in San Mames.

Such results will not define Bilbao's season, but unfortunately for Ernesto Valverde's side, they now run into another heavyweight outfit from the Spanish capital, with Atletico Madrid looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat against Barcelona last weekend.

Athletic Bilbao are aggressive without the ball and direct in transition, traits that often rattle visiting teams, but Atletico are built to handle hostile environments and remain one of the most streetwise outfits in Europe, with Diego Simeone’s men again boasting one of the tightest defences in the league.

Both sides have important UEFA Champions League fixtures on the horizon but cannot afford any complacency here. Atletico have the greater squad depth to deal with the current fixture run though, and with Bilbao having not been as strong at home recently as they usually are, a cautious bet on the visitors is worth a look.
