It is therefore a positive thing for Unai Emery’s men that their alternative route into Europe’s elite competition, which is seemingly financially imperative, is this tournament and they have a 1-0 aggregate lead against Lille in he round of 16, courtesy of a second-half winner scored by Ollie Watkins in the first-leg at Stade Pierre-Mauroy last week.
Lille have been strong at times this season but have been under par since the turn of the year and, with their home advantage, Aston Villa would be expected to come out on top and move themselves into the quarter-finals.
