Aryna Sabalenka vs Marketa Vondrousova prediction

Aryna Sabalenka’s title defence continues in what seems like ominous fashion following a routine win over Cristina Bucsa.

The world number one charged into her 12th straight Grand Slam quarter-final courtesy of a 6-1 6-4 success that was her 11th victory in a row at Flushing Meadows.

The Belarusian will now face Marketa Vondrousova, who saw off in-form Elena Rybakina 6-4 5-7 6-2 to back up a dominant win over Jasmine Paolini. 

The former Wimbledon champion has proven in the past that she can hit a purple patch and cause anyone trouble in a major draw and this will be Sabalenka’s biggest test yet. 

This is their 10th meeting with the top seed leading 5-4, although she has won the last four on hard courts and leads 4-2 on that surface.

Indeed, Sabalenka posted a 7-5 6-1 success in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago and that may well be a barometer of how this clash will go. 

The names Vondrousova has despatched so far in New York will give her confidence and she did beat Sabalenka on the grass of Berlin earlier this year and on the clay of Stuttgart in 2024.

The surface may well be the key in this one with Sabalenka’s power in fast conditions likely to give her the edge, although the market may be so heavily stacked in her favour that exploring the odds around the Czech taking it the distance could be worthwhile.
