Aryna Sabalenka’s quest for French Open glory kicks off against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
The world number one was a set up in last year’s final but ultimately lost to Coco Gauff and her hunger for the fifth Grand Slam of her career – and a first away from hardcourts – is greater than ever.
The Belarusian was imperious for much of the season up until Madrid and Rome where early exits perhaps cracked the air of invincibility she had that was leaving much of the tour fearing taking to court against her.
That said, the top seed should be too strong for Bouzas Maneiro and did win their previous two meetings in straight sets last year.
The Spanish world number 51 reached the quarter-finals in Rabat prior to arriving in Paris but she doesn’t really have the same firepower as Sabalenka and it will be a case of how many games the underdog can muster.
