Aryna Sabalenka got her Indian Wells campaign off to a winning start after defeating Himeno Sakatsume in straight sets. It was Sabalenka’s first match since the final of the Australian Open over a month ago, and she produced a brilliant serving performance as she did not face a break point and won 80% of her first serve points. Sabalenka is seeking a first title at this event, having reached the final in 2023 and 2025.
She now faces Jaqueline Cristian. The Romanian recovered from a dreadful start to defeat Maya Joint. Cristian dropped the first set without winning a single game, but she recovered well in the second as she broke immediately and went on to level the match up. She led in the deciding set and managed to break again and serve it out to win 0-6 6-2 7-5.
If Sabalenka serves as well as she did in her previous match, Cristian is going to be severely limited in terms of creating any opportunities.
