Aryna Sabalenka came from a set and a break down to take down four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka as she continued the defence of her title in Madrid. The world number one lost the first set on a tiebreak and was in trouble as Osaka broke to go 2-1 up in the second. She now faces Hailey Baptiste. The American battled past Belinda Bencic to win in three sets. Baptiste had the opportunity to secure a win in the second set tiebreak, but Bencic saved six match points to force a decider. Baptiste recovered to claim a 6-1 6-7 (14) 6-3 win. This was her eighth WTA 1000 main draw win of the season, equalling her career best in 2025.
They played against each other for the first time at Indian Wells last month, with Sabalenka winning 6-4 6-4. Baptiste is enjoying her best season so far, but Sabalenka is a relentless competitor and keeps racking up victories.
