Aryna Sabalenka now has 21 wins from 22 matches this season as she defeated Hailey Baptiste in straight sets to reach the semi-finals at the Miami Open. The world number one, who is the defending champion at this tournament, was tested by Baptiste but broke at the end of both sets to win 6-4 6-4 after one hour and 20 minutes.
Her only defeat this season came against Elena Rybakina in the final of the Australian Open, and they will face off again after the two-time Grand Slam champion came from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula for the fifth time in a row. Rybakina looked in trouble as she lost the first set and was down 0-40 on her own serve at 2-2 in the second. Nevertheless, she saved all of those break points and was not broken on serve in sets two and three as she won 2-6 6-3 6-4.
While Rybakina did win their match in Melbourne, Sabalenka exacted revenge in the final of Indian Wells less than a fortnight ago, saving a championship point as she won a dramatic match in the deciding set tiebreak. Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 9-7 overall and 6-5 on outdoor hard court.
The quicker surface in Miami may give the edge to Rybakina, who will look to dominate on her first serve. Sabalenka only just got over the line at Indian Wells, and she is in for another battle as this rivalry resumes again.
