Nevertheless, the Frenchman has also struggled at other events and has only reached one quarter-final so far this year, in Dubai.
He faces Karen Khachanov. The Russian has also not enjoyed a strong 2026 up to this point. His best result was a quarter-final appearance at the Rotterdam Open. He has lost seven of his 14 matches, and his form has taken a slide ever since his final appearance at the Canadian Open back in August.
Khachanov will be the favourite, but he has won just two of his 11 matches against top 50 players since that final. Neither player is in great form, and this should be a competitive first-round match.
