FIVE KEY FACTORS
- After a two week break, F1 is back this weekend for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The British GP is one of the most prestigious and historic of races and has been on the calendar every year since 1950. Characterised by fast sweeping corners and long straights, the 3.6-mile circuit is a favourite with both fans and drivers. It is also the home race for most of the F1 teams.
- Heading into the British GP, rumours are that Silverstone has agreed a new multi-year contract with Liberty Media. The British race’s future on the F1 calendar is reportedly safe, with a new deal in place that will take effect from 2020 onwards. The track has also been resurfaced for the second year in a row following criticism of the new surface laid in 2018.
- This weekend Lewis Hamilton has the opportunity to become a record-breaking six-time British Grand Prix winner. Despite his set-back in Austria, the form the British racing ace is enjoying makes it hard not to predict that he will win his sixth race at Silverstone.
- Austria exposed the weaknesses of the Mercedes car, namely heat and altitude. Expect Mercedes to be back on form with much lower temperatures and no altitude issues, with a fast track suited to the Silver Arrows. It is highly likely that Mercedes can achieve another 1-2 this weekend.
- McLaren are having a much better season and are emerging as the best of the mid-field teams. The other legendary British Team, Williams, sadly continue to languish at the back of the grid. Rumours heading to Silverstone suggest Williams are looking at switching engine providers.
THE PREDICTION
After the anomaly of Austria, Mercedes are expected to be back on form and should dominate at Silverstone. There is a new smooth track on the classic circuit with long straights and fast, sweeping cornering. There will also be significantly cooler temperatures. All these factors will suit the Silver Arrows.
Both Ferrari and Redbull will be determined to spoil the Mercedes juggernaut. The Honda power was surprisingly impressive in Austria, and hopes will be high that Redbull can produce another shock. Realistically though, Mercedes will have the edge.
The real battle will be between Hamilton and Bottas. It should be close, but Hamilton will be particularly motivated. The reigning champion can power to a record-breaking win at his home race this weekend.
