THE TEAM NEWS
SPAIN
- Despite losing their opening game of the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championships to Italy, Spain have done brilliantly to make their way to the final and did so following a superb performance to see off France in their semi-final.
- The Spaniards found themselves a goal down early on thanks to a 16th-minute penalty but they hit back with two goals of their own through Marc Roca and Mikel Oyarzabal with his goal from the spot sending his side ahead at the break.
- Spain hit a third soon after the break through Dani Olmo before substitute Borja Mayoral sealed the 4-1 win and after such a dominant performance, they are expected to field the same starting XI for the final.
GERMANY
- Reigning champions Germany were given a scare by Romania in their semi-final at the European Under-21 Championships as they needed two goals to ensure they progressed to the final.
- The Germans took the lead through Nadiem Amiri but found themselves trailing at the break and needed a penalty from Luca Waldschmidt, who has scored in every game in the tournament so far, to level the game.
- With the game looking like it was not going to be settled in normal time, Waldschmidt scored his seventh goal of the competition in the final minute of the game before Amiri sealed the win in stoppage time to put Germany in with a chance of making it back-to-back European Championships and they should field the same team for the final.
THE PREDICTION
Germany have a chance to retain their Under-21 European Championship crown but face a huge fight to do so as they must overcome the impressive Spain in the final. The Spaniards have done well to make the final after losing their opening game to Italy but have been superb ever since and will believe they have the side to lift the trophy. Germany possess the tournament’s top scorer in Luca Waldschmidt but will need to produce a much better display than they managed against Romania in the semi-finals with Spain able to play at a higher level and the Spanish can edge what should be a fascinating contest.
