Ranked 117 in the world, Antonia Ruzic qualified for the main draw in Rome after straight set victories over Yue Yuan and Jule Niemeier. Ruzic had not competed on the WTA Tour for nearly three months after her second-round loss in Linz, instead playing on the ITF Tour and winning an event in Trvana. She made her return in Madrid but couldn’t make it out of qualifying.
She takes on 17-year-old Tyra Caterina Grant for a place in the second-round. The youngster competed in the qualifying of Madrid but lost out at the second stage to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her best showing this year was making the final of a W75 event in Porto. Caterina Grant was born in Italy but holds both Italian and American citizenship. She began her junior career representing the United States but has just switched to Italy ahead of making her WTA main draw bow in her hometown of Rome.
Caterina Grant will have home support behind her and could cause a few problems, but the more experienced Ruzic should have enough for the win.
