Anna Bondar overcame Harmony Tan in three sets to make it through to the next stage of the tournament in Rouen. Bondar was broken in her first service game and went 2-0 down, but then reeled off six games in a row to take the first set. Despite losing the second set, Bondar regrouped brilliantly as she controlled the third to win 6-2 4-6 6-0 after two hours and 18 minutes. She saved 10 out of 12 break points in total.
She now faces Oleksandra Oliynykova. The Ukrainian produced a fine display to beat Lilli Tagger in three sets. Tagger had impressed at the Linz Open last week, and she looked on course for a comeback win after going 4-1 up in the deciding set. However, Oliynykova won the last five games in total to win 6-4 4-6 6-4.
These two faced each other earlier this year at the Transylvania Open, with Oliynykova winning in straight sets. Bondar will be looking for revenge here, and this could be a more competitive encounter.
