Ann Li advanced in Madrid as Iga Swiatek was forced to retire in the deciding set of their third-round match. The American took the lead after winning the first set on a tiebreak, but Swiatek hit back in the second to draw level. Li raced clear at the start of the third, which led to the six-time Grand Slam champion withdrawing as a result of a stomach virus.
She now takes on Leylah Fernandez. The Canadian continued her resurgence as she came from a set down to beat Iva Jovic. Fernandez advanced to her first quarter-final of the campaign last week at the Stuttgart Open and nearly defeated world number two Elena Rybakina in her last eight match, losing despite having two match points. She beat Jovic 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Li does lead the head-to-head 2-0, defeating Fernandez at this very event in 2025 and beating her in Doha earlier this year. The 2021 US Open finalist has finally found form, and she is eyeing up back-to-back quarter-finals.
