Anhelina Kalinina continued her brilliant run in Madrid as she defeated Marie Bouzkova in the second-round. The Ukrainian, who beat former slam champion Sloane Stephens in the second stage of qualifying, was 3-1 down in the first set but quickly took control and went ahead in the match. She broke three more times in the second to win 6-4 6-3.
Kalinina now faces four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka for a place in the round-of-16. Osaka defeated Camila Osorio in straight sets. She moved into the lead with ease, but encountered problems in the second set as Osorio improved her level. Osorio served to take the match into a deciding set, but Osaka broke back and won the last three games in total to seal a 6-2 7-5 victory.
Kalinina has enjoyed an excellent season up to this point, with strong results on the ITF circuit and a deep run at a WTA 1000 tournament. Nevertheless, Osaka is the favourite to advance.
