Andrey Rublev ended a three-match losing run but was still taken to a deciding set as he began his campaign in Monte-Carlo with a win over Nuno Borges. Rublev, who won this event in 2023, was uncompetitive in the second set but rallied in the third to win 6-4 1-6 6-1 after one hour and 34 minutes.
He now takes on Zizou Bergs. The Belgian beat Adrian Mannarino to advance. He went a break up in the first set and despite being pegged back, managed to take the lead. Bergs ended up breaking twice in the second to claim a 6-4 6-3 win.
The head-to-head is tied at 1-1 between the pair, but this is their first meeting on clay. Though he was not close to his best in the first-round, Rublev will be pleased to end his losing run and he does tend to perform well at this tournament. The slower conditions provide him with time to generate pace on his lethal forehand, and if he can dictate from the start, he could get this done in straight sets.
