Anastasija Sevastova could not make an impact in New York as a tough draw saw her lose in the first-round to Ekaterina Alexandrova, one of the most consistent players on tour this season. However, she did fare well in her last Masters event when she made the round-of-16 in Cincinnati just last month. That stands as the Latvian’s most impressive result of her comeback season so far.
Kimberly Birrell also failed to make it out of round one at the US Open as she lost to Amanda Anisimova in straight sets. Anisimova would go on to make the final. The Australian has lost six of her last seven matches, with the only win coming in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open. Birrell showed promise at the start of the season with quarter-finals in Brisbane and Singapore but it’s been tough going for her since that point.
Sevastova’s strong all-round game makes her a tough opponent on this surface and she has the tools to defeat Birrell in the first-round.
