Anastasia Zakharova vs Zhang Shuai prediction
Anastasia Zakharova won both of her qualifying matches convincingly to make the main draw. She managed the same feat in Seoul but lost in the first-round to Sorana Cirstea. Zakharova also showed some form heading into the US Open as she made the semi-finals of Tennis in the Land, again coming up short against Cirstea. That was her best WTA result of the season.
Zhang Shuai is her opponent in round one. The 36-year-old last competed at the US Open after making it through all three stages of qualifying without the drop of a set. However, she was comprehensively defeated by Belinda Bencic in round one. She has featured sporadically this season and though she has enjoyed some success on the ITF circuit, her progress on the WTA Tour has been limited.
Zakharova will need to serve well against the home favourite, but she has far more matches under belt and should outlast her Chinese opponent.
