Alize Cornet’s return to the tour this season has already been hampered by injuries. She withdrew from La Bisbal before her quarter-final match, which resulted in her pulling out of Rouen altogether. She did compete in qualifying for the Italian Open but lost at the first stage to Anna Bondar in straight sets. The player with the most consecutive Grand Slam appearances in the history of the women’s game now takes on Marie Bouzkova.
Bouzkova qualifies as a lucky loser, having lost her qualifying match to Caroline Dolehide in straight sets. The Czech had an encouraging run at the Italian Open as she defeated two players, including seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia, before a defeat in the third-round to four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka despite taking the first set.
Cornet has already struggled with fitness since making her return to tennis at the beginning of last month and that should swing things in Bouzkova’s favour. We back her to make it through to the next round with a straight sets win.
