Alexei Popyrin’s poor season continued at the Sunshine Double events as he lost in the first-round to Jenson Brooksby and Marin Cilic respectively. The Australian has won just two matches out of 11 in 2026, and he will be hoping for an upturn in form during the clay court season.

He faces Patrick Kypson in the first-round. The American’s highlight of the year so far was the huge upset over Alex de Minaur in the first-round of the Mexican Open. However, Kypson has not been able to win a match since, as he lost in the next stage of the tournament to Brandon Nakashima before following that up with qualifying losses at Indian Wells and Miami.

Neither player is in great form at the moment, but Popyrin has shown in the past that he can excel on the surface, having made the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters last season. Kypson won’t be able to utilise his serve as effectively here, and Popyrin may just have a slight edge.
