Alexandra Eala defeated Laura Siegemund in the second-round as she came from a set down to win. Eala had three set points in the first set as Siegemund served to stay in it, with the German saving them all and going on to edge ahead in the tiebreak. Nevertheless, Eala would come through to win 6-7 (6) 6-3 6-3 after three hours and 20 minutes.
She now faces Magda Linette, after the Pole pulled off a huge upset by beating compatriot Iga Swiatek in round two. Swiatek, who won the tournament in 2022, produced a number of errors off either wing as Linette recovered from a tough start to win 1-6 7-5 6-3 after two hours and 10 minutes.
Linette leads the head-to-head 2-1 but Eala has the only win on hard court and came out on top in their most recent match in Auckland at the start of this year. The Filipino will look to be aggressive in the early stages as she seeks to make another deep run in Miami this year. Linette is coming off a big win, but Eala is still the favourite.
