Alexandra Eala is through to the next round of Indian Wells after world number four Coco Gauff was forced to retire from their match. Eala was leading 6-2 2-0 when Gauff decided to end the match due to injury. There were four consecutive breaks at the start, but the Filipino quickly took control as the two-time Grand Slam singles champion faded.
She now takes on Linda Noskova. The Czech came from a set down to defeat Sorana Cirstea and exact her revenge after losing to the same opponent in Dubai last month. Cirstea led after winning the first set tiebreak, but Noskova was solid on serve in the next two sets and went on to win 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-4.
Noskova will attempt adopt a first strike approach in order to win points quickly, with Eala hoping to extend the rallies and force her opponent into errors. It’s an interesting mix of styles in this match, and this could very well go the distance.
