Alexandra Eala showed her quality at Indian Wells as she reached the round-of-16. However, she was uncompetitive against Linda Noskova, winning just the two games as she was defeated 6-2 6-0 within an hour. Nevertheless, Eala has built up a solid run of form during the opening leg of the season. This includes quarter-final finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. She now returns to the event where she made her first breakthrough, as she beat the likes of Iga Swiatek to reach the semi-finals last year.
Eala faces Laura Siegemund. The German has not enjoyed a great start to the season but was able to win her first-round match in Miami after beating an out-of-form Petra Marcinko. The pair exchanged breaks at the start of the match, but Siegemund went in front after breaking in the 10th game of the first set and serving it out. She held serve in the second after another break to win 6-4 6-4.
Eala will need to be patient when up against Siegemund’s unconventional approach, but the 20-year-old is the firm favourite.
