Alexander Blockx has enjoyed a breakthrough during this clay court season. He defeated the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo to advance to his first ever Masters 1000 semi-final in Madrid, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. He then lost to Zverev again in Rome at the third-round stage, but the Belgian is now ranked inside the top 40 of the rankings.
His first-round opponent is Coleman Wong, who enters the draw as a lucky loser. Wong lost his final qualifying match against Juan Carlos Prado Angelo. He did win a Challenger title in Jiujiang earlier this month, while he also advanced to quarter-finals at Hong Kong and Delray Beach.
This is a match that Blockx will be expected to win, and if he can reproduce his level he showed at the Madrid Open, he could prove a seriously dangerous opponent for the higher-ranked players in the draw.
