Alexander Blockx collected his maiden top-20 victory on his 21st birthday as he swept aside Flavio Cobolli in the second-round. Cobolli produced a number of errors from the start, but Blockx never dropped his level as he won 6-3 6-3.
He now takes on Alex de Minaur. The Australian beat Cameron Norrie in the previous stage of the tournament. Norrie had won their match at Indian Wells just a month earlier, but it was De Minaur that came out on top this time as he won six of the last seven games to claim a 7-6 (5) 2-6 6-2 win.
De Minaur was not at his best during the Sunshine Double, losing two of his three matches, while he also suffered a surprising early loss in Acapulco after winning the Rotterdam Open. However, that win over Norrie will provide him with confidence and he enjoys a pretty strong record at this event, having reached the semi-finals last year.
