He challenged world number two Jannik Sinner at times, even establishing a 5-2 lead in the second set, but Sinner would stage a comeback to complete the win in straight sets. Michelsen reached the quarter-finals of this event last year, losing to Frances Tiafoe.

He faces Coleman Wong in round one. He is up to his highest ranking of 120 in the world. He has reached ATP quarter-finals this season, but his form has been less impressive in recent weeks, as he failed to make it out of the qualifying stages in Miami and then lost in the first-round of the Morelia Challenger. 

Michelsen has produced consistent results in recent weeks, and though he will have to readjust his game on the clay, he should be viewed as a firm favourite to reach the next stage of the tournament against Wong.
