Alex Michelsen got his tournament up and running with a comfortable win over Coleman Wong in the first-round. Michelsen could only convert three out of 12 break points, but he wasn’t broken on serve and was always in control as he cruised to a 6-4 6-2 win after one hour and 25 minutes. The American is in decent form at the moment, as he reached the round-of-16 at both Sunshine Double events.
He faces Alexei Popyrin next. The Australian has struggled for much of this season so far, but he came from a set down to beat Patrick Kypson. Popyrin broke for the first time at the end of the second set to draw level, before crucially saving two break points in the first game of the decider. He controlled the rest of the set to win 4-6 6-4 6-3.
Michelsen has performed well in recent weeks, and he will be the favourite to defeat Popyrin and advance to the next round of the competition.
