Alex de Minaur’s poor form continued in Madrid as he was blown away by Rafael Jodar in his opening match. De Minaur looked out of sorts as he was defeated 6-3 6-1 by the teenager. His season began strongly, as he progressed to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and won a title in Rotterdam, but his results have been largely disappointing since then.
Matteo Arnaldi continued his good run as he beat Jaume Munar in three sets to book his place in the second-round. Arnaldi outlasted the Spaniard to win 6-3 3-6 6-3. This extended his winning run to six matches, following his success at the Cagliari Challenger last week. This is the Italian’s best sequence of results for quite some time.
De Minaur is still the clear favourite as the sixth seed, but Arnaldi will relish the opportunity of testing him after some encouraging performances over the course of the last week.
