Alex de Minaur saved four set points in the third set to wrap up a 6-3 6-4 7-6 victory over Laslo Djere. Djere had picked up a clay court title earlier on in the year in Chile and was a dangerous first-round opponent for the Australian, but De Minaur did well to register a win in straight sets.
He takes on Alexander Bublik in round two. Bublik also won in straight sets as he defeated James Duckworth 6-2 6-4 6-4 to make the second-round for the fifth time at Roland Garros. The Kazhakstani has never gone beyond this stage before, but he’s picked up his first ever clay court title this year and will be a difficult opponent for De Minaur.
De Minuar has won their previous three encounters, including a victory on clay in Barcelona four years ago. He hasn’t lost a set in any of those matches and despite Bublik enjoying a decent clay court campaign, the world number nine should be making it through to the next round here.
