Auger-Aliassime took the first set, but Kovacevic hit back by breaking late in the second to force a decider. The American trailed 4-1 in the deciding set, but he improved his level to rattle off the final five games and win 4-6 7-5 6-4. He becomes the first US player to make the quarter-finals in Hamburg since Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras in 1995.
He now faces Camilo Ugo Carabelli. The Argentine moved into the quarter-finals after beating Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Ugo Carabelli edged ahead in both tiebreaks to win 7-6 (3) 7-6 (4).
Kovacevic only entered the main draw as a lucky loser, but he’s now into the last eight after one of the best wins of his career so far. Nevertheless, Ugo Carabelli is a very dangerous player on clay, and he has enough quality to win this one.
