Ajla Tomljanovic vs Jessica Pegula prediction
Ajla Tomljanovic snapped a three match losing streak as she advanced through to the second-round of the China Open with a win over Yulia Starodubtseva. The Ukrainian raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set and despite Tomljanovic fighting back, had the opportunity to serve out the set. However, Tomljanovic broke again and dominated the tiebreak to take the lead, before dominating the second to seal a 7-6 6-2 win.
Jessica Pegula, the fifth seed, is her opponent in round two. She was part of a USA side that made the final of the Billie Jean King Cup, but they lost to Italy with Pegula losing out to Jasmine Paolini in the crucial singles match. Nevertheless, Pegula did return to form at the US Open with another deep run. In a rematch of last year’s final, she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals despite taking the first set and a fine performance overall. She also has three titles this season, all on different surfaces.
Pegula leads the head-to-head 3-0 and has won their two encounters this year. She is starting to perform again and her consistent approach gives her a strong chance of winning in straight sets.
