Yuliia Starodubtseva has enjoyed straight set victories in each of her games at the Monterrey Open, against Lilli Tagger and then Janice Tjen. These wins have come after what was a six-match losing streak since the Nottingham Open in mid-June.
Elise Mertens must fancy herself now as the favourite for the Monterrey Open. The 30-year-old Belgian overcame lucky loser Panna Udvardy in the previous round after what has been a steady year.
Mertens was not convincing in that victory against Udvardy and so she may be a little concerned about coming up against in-form Starodubsteva.
