Jan-Lennard Struff last competed at the Shanghai Masters, winning his first-round match against Martin Landaluce. However, he was then beaten by former world number one Daniil Medvedev in round two, despite winning the first set. That was Struff’s second defeat to Medvedev in the space of a week, as he also lost to the Russian at the same stage of the China Open. Struff has largely struggled for results this season, other than a superb run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

He plays Marcos Giron in the first-round of the European Open. The American’s poor form continued last time out in Shanghai, losing his opening match to Sebastian Baez. Giron began well and won the first set with ease, but Baez fought back to win 1-6 6-3 6-4. That extended his losing run to six matches, and Giron is without a main-draw victory since Wimbledon.

The head-to-head is locked at 1-1, with Struff winning their last meeting four years ago in Stuttgart. Giron is low on confidence after a difficult run of results, and the German could be able to take advantage.
