Victoria Azarenka got off to a brilliant start at Bad Homburg as she defeated Laura Siegemund 6-2 6-2 in the first-round. The Belarussian won 85% of points on her first serve and didn’t even give up a break point. This was a perfect way for Azarenka to start on grass having not featured on the tour for nearly a month.
She is up against five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the next round of the competition. Swiatek last competed at the French Open at the start of the month. The Pole was in pursuit of her fifth Roland Garros title and her fourth in a row but Aryna Sabalenka ended her incredible 26-match winning run at the event in a gripping semi-final.
Swiatek has never reached a final on grass and it’s comfortably her worst surface. However, she does dominate the head-to-head with Azarenka. The two-time Australian Open champion defeated Swiatek at the 2020 US Open on her way to making the final in their first meeting. However, Swiatek has won the next four matches with the drop of just one set.
The world number eight may take a while to get going on the grass but will be the heavy favourite to win.
